Pigmentation Treatment (Cosmelan and Dermamelan Enzymatic Peel)
Pigmentation can appear on the body, and especially the face, for a variety of reasons. These patches, darker than the surrounding skin, are not a health threat, but they can be a cosmetic concern and, for some, affect confidence and social life. The pigment that gives skin its colour is melanin, and pigmentation forms when it accumulates in certain areas. Some marks appear in adolescence, some with age, some are present from birth, and others result from environmental and sun damage.
The main cause of pigmentation is ultraviolet (UV) light. As well as giving skin its colour, melanin protects deeper tissue from UV rays, so intense exposure or years of accumulated sun can lead to pigmentation in genetically predisposed people. Pregnancy, certain medications, some illnesses and cosmetics can also increase light sensitivity and trigger pigmentation.
Cosmelan and Dermamelan are among the effective methods used to treat pigmentation. They suppress melanin production at enzyme level, preventing overproduction; existing pigment is shed through peeling, while continued suppression during treatment helps normalise melanin production. Because they contain no trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or other aggressive peeling acids, the risk of side effects is very low and they are far more comfortable than other peels.
Redness and light peeling are common, and sensitive skin may show some swelling. Cosmelan is used for mild pigmentation and anti-ageing, while Dermamelan is chosen for more intense pigmentation and stronger anti-ageing goals. Which one is right for you is decided after a skin assessment. The most common areas are the face, neck, décolletage and backs of the hands, though other areas can also be treated.
Sun protection is the most important part of the treatment. Even after the programme is complete, you should keep using a high-SPF sunscreen during the day and, especially in summer, a brightening cream in the evening. Without these precautions, pigmentation can return.
Types of pigmentation:
- Melasma (chloasma, the mask of pregnancy): linked to the pill or pregnancy hormones; appears on the forehead, nose, cheeks, upper lip and chin.
- Photo-allergic reactions: marks caused by medications or cosmetics that increase UV sensitivity.
- Sun and sunbed pigmentation: develops with sun exposure in predisposed or sensitised skin.
- Freckles (ephelides): present from birth, darker in sunny seasons and lighter in winter.
- Solar lentigines (age spots): caused by years of sun exposure, ranging from light brown to black.
- Post-inflammatory marks: dark marks left after wounds, burns, acne or skin procedures.
